Biography:
Jeff Capogreco is a Canadian visual effects supervisor at Industrial Light & Magic. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Capogreco began his career in the mid-2000s in Canada, working as a modeller, lighting technical director, and digital artist on animated and live-action projects such as The Wild (2006), The Ant Bully (2006), and VeggieTales (1993). He later joined Mr. X Inc., contributing as a digital artist and supervisor on films including Death Race (2008), Max Payne (2008), Resident Evil: Extinction (2007), and Shoot' Em Up (2007).
After moving to New Zealand, Capogreco joined Weta Digital, where he advanced through roles in lighting, CG, and digital effects supervision. During this period, he worked on high-profile productions such as Avatar (2009), Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), The Adventures of Tintin (2011), The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013), and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014). His work on the character Gollum in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) earned him the Annie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Character Animation in a Live Action Production in 2014, shared with fellow collaborators, and a Visual Effects Society Award nomination for Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture in 2013.
Capogreco joined Industrial Light & Magic in 2014, where he has since served as a visual effects supervisor on a wide range of large-scale franchise films. His credits at ILM include Godzilla (2014), Jurassic World (2015), Transformers: The Last Knight (2017), Kong: Skull Island (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019), Aladdin (2019), The Kissing Booth 2 (2020), Jurassic World: Dominion (2022), and Tron: Ares (2025). His work on Aladdin (2019) received a Saturn Award nomination for Best Special Effects, while Godzilla (2014) earned a Gold Derby Award nomination for Visual Effects.
In television, Capogreco has played a key supervisory role on several major Lucasfilm series, including The Mandalorian (2019), Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022), and Skeleton Crew (2024). He won the Hollywood Professional Association Award for Outstanding Visual Effects – Episodic for The Mandalorian, Season 2, Episode 1, "Chapter 9: The Marshal" (2020), shared with his team. His work on Skeleton Crew (2024) earned a Visual Effects Society Award nomination in 2025 for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Episode.
Capogreco also received a Satellite Award nomination for Best Visual Effects for Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), as well as multiple Visual Effects Society Award nominations for his contributions to animated characters and environments. His work on Tron: Ares (2025) has been nominated by several critics' organisations for Best Visual Effects or Best Special Effects.
